The Information Ecology and Future Trends

Information Ecology



Ecology, in a biological sense, is the study of how living things relate to one another in a particular habitat or environment. An ecological food (energy) web chart seeks to explain this relationship in terms of an arrow diagram.

All types of plants in a particular area are placed in the bottom row of the diagram because they are food producers (or energy storers). Consumers of these are placed in the second row. They are called first order consumers. Arrows are used to show the movement of food (or the energy stored in the food) from the plant to the consumer. One animal may have arrows from a variety of plant sources (ants eating seeds from a tree, dead matter of another plant, etc.). The third row would contain animals that eat either the first order consumers or the plants (or both). The arrows would again come from the food source to the new animal.

The food is the source of the arrow. The arrow represents the direction of the flow of energy (stored in the food). The resulting diagram gives a pictorial grasp of the intricate balance of life in the area. It enables the effect of any change in numbers of any one type of animal or plant to be more easily evaluated.

Cappurro’s (1989) use of the term to describe the complex interaction of information and its movement in the web environment is apt. The direction of flow of information (or communication method), often bidirectional, is represented by the arrow. The data (or information) is the commodity being transported. Thus it is appropriate to describe an Information Ecology. The diagram itself reveals the patterns of communication used in the information transfer.

Future considerations for Information Sharing



With the exponential growth of information being stored or accessed from electronic sources it is critical that these information flows are researched and analysed if consumers are to have ready access to even part of this vast store of knowledge. Some of the factors to be considered in this future planning should be:

1. The growth of Peer-to-Peer networks provides a method of reducing the load on servers. The flow of information is no longer from the user via the servers to the source but can be directed via a vast array of other users in order to obtain and consolidate the information required (Barkai, 2000).

2. With the information being supplied from reliable and casual sources (blogs, personal web pages, etc.) it becomes vital that users are trained to evaluate the source and hence the validity of the information. Almost daily ‘facts’ are published in newspapers, on the television or in blogs detailing the latest news event or breakthrough in medical technology. These are very often followed by letters and articles exposing the information to be biased, misleading or written by someone with their own hidden agenda.

3. The current problems of major newspapers in maintaining a readership due to the loss of revenue from classified sources (career, house sales, etc.) to the Internet suggests the eventual transfer from these hardcopy sources to a paid Internet subscription. This in itself would only transfer journalism to another medium but could have the result that more users would choose less authenticated sources. On the plus side the load on servers could be reduced if a peer-to-peer distribution network based on current newsagent webs were introduced.

4. The loss of historical information needs to be addressed. An example of this could be the records departments of major utilities. In the past new maps were drawn and the old ones were stored in order to keep an historical record. In the present day the old maps, as computer images, are modified. The originals are not always saved. This problem of modification and ‘pollution’ of information can be extended to data bank records in a vast number of areas leading to problems tracing necessary previous information.

5. Cappurro (1989) discusses the imbalance of power that could result if information access in third world countries was not equal to that of more advances societies. I would extend this to our own community. The introduction of the proposed 3G (and Telstra’s 4G) network will result in the movement of government and reliable consumer information to the Internet. With the proposed significant increase in costs of access to these networks (both in terms of the hardware required and the broadband access fees), a large percentage of users will be similarly severely disadvantaged and hence dis-empowered.

6. Cappuro (1989) suggests that the “information is always relative to a theoretical and/or practical pre-understanding” of the user. With information being globally available this is becoming an important consideration in international relations. I feel that the image of our own country may in the future be formed, not by official and/or reliable sources, but by the advertising and unedited blogs produced by ordinary citizens. Blogs, for example, may be interpreted by our own readers as the imaginative or wishful outpourings of ordinary citizens and not necessarily indicative of their actual values and behavior. In a more restrictive culture these could give the impression of a decadent society. I am not sure how this can be countered but a solution, probably educational, may have to be found in order to counteract the unconscious biases formed by future leaders in both the political and economic sphere.

7. The legal access issues to books and other media will need to be resolved if the use of electronic publishing and copying continues to escalate.

"In the era of the 'attention economy', readers and users of internet information must be carefully craft, in their own minds, the kind of metadata which will - almost instinctively - 'fit' with the metadata of the information sources they want, so that - in the few brief moments of initial exchange, when a seeker of information encounters information being sought, rapid, effective judgments are made that 'pay off' in terms of further reading, accessing and saving." (Allen, n.d.)

Blackwell (1999) explains Latham's definition of an "attention economy" using "information is not a particularly scarce resource.... attention is the scarce resource which must be allocated in a developing global economy". A large body of research literature has been produced to apply this to computer programming, web pages for e-commerce and user behaviour in accessing information on the Internet.

Gigerenzer and Goldstein (1996) reported Simon's contention that "information-process systems typically need to satisfice rather than optimize", where he defined "satisficing" as "a blend of sufficing and satisfying". The user needs to satisfice, or access the topics he requires in the minimum time and with the minimum effort.

Access is achieved using metadata, the keywords in a document. These can be defined by the writer in the header and title of the web document. More usually Search Engines use mechanical means (crawlers) to isolate all the words users are likely to use in searching for the document. While this can be a very useful facility it relies on the writer using similar terms to those used in the search. It also produces enormous databases of documents. One keyword can elicit a wide range sources covering a large number of topics of differing academic reliability and applicability. The problem for the user is to construct his keyword search, using Boolean terminology, so that he has to peruse the minimum number of documents in order to satisfice his needs.

In addition, Search engines use different methods of calculating the relative importance of the web pages retrieved. They have different methods of calculating these, using factors such as the number of 'hits' on the page, the number of times the word appears in the document, etc. This further complicates the user's choice.

Neilson's research (2001) into user searches for e-commerce sites revealed that their success rates for the first, second and third quiries were 51%, 32% and 18% respectively. He concludes that "if users don't find the result with their first query, they are progressively less and less likely to succeed with additional searches."

I feel that the answer to this problem lies in user education. With each new generation being more comfortable with using Web 2 technologies it becomes important that they be introduced to more efficient methods. The most obvious of these is to construct the search using Boolean terminology or the Advanced Search methods available in most modern browsers. However, in my experience, a vast majority of users have difficulty distinguishing between "and", "or", "not" and "nor".

Gigenzer and Goldstein (1996) researched alternative algorithms in order to find the most efficient method for the general user, with minimum background knowledge, to solve a particular problem. Their results,extrapolated to web searches suggest that the Boolean approach is not suitable for most users. The "Take the Best Algorithm" involves the user producing two keywords for his search and inspecting the results. This will enable him to make one of three choices. If only one produces the best results the other is discarded. If neither produces a recognizable result then both are discarded and a new search instigated. If both produce results of equal rating, choose the one that has "highest ranking from memory", or fits the best. If both seem equally applicable, choose at random. Surprising they found this to be the fastest and most accurate method for people with little background information - a bulk of users.

This article discusses the scarcity of (and hence value of) attention in all forms of computer usage, both from programmer and user perspectives. It defines the "attentional locus" of each type of task in terms of the user's perceived "estimated potential value, estimated cost and estimated risk". The explanations are detailed but simple to understand.


The authors are academics based in the Universities of Cambridge and Leeds respectively. They are leaders in this research and their many articles are cited in many peer review publications.


The concepts, while not specifically discussing metadata searching, provided an excellent background for my discussion of the user attention problems when searching the web.


Gigerenzer, G & Goldstein, D.G. (1996). Reasoning the Fast and Frugal way: Models of Bounded Rationality. Psychological Review, vol 103, No.4, 650-669. Retrieved May 8, 2009, from the Copernic Agent Basic database.

The authors provide a summary of their research into algorithms to "enable quick decision making". After a detailed comparison of "classical rationality methods" with practical "satisficing" methods they discuss the results of their experiments using the latter. They found that the "Take the Best" algorithm produced very high accuracy when compared to the "Take the Last" and "Minimalist" algorithms, particularly when the user had little background knowledge of the topic.

The academics are based in the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research and the University of Chicago. It is a treatise (with detailed statistical analysis) of their simulated experiments.


The comparison provided a factual basis to the efficiency of metadata searching and hence user behaviour and satisfaction.

Concept 8. The Invisibility of Difference



"The daily practice of electronic communication is shaped by over-familiarity with one's own computer system, and a tendency to assume that - as with much more established forms of communication - everyone is operating within compatible and similar systems. When in doubt, seek to communicate in ways that are readable and effective for all users, regardless of their particular systems."(Allen. n.d.)

Due to the proliferation of small portable devices, coupled with the work ethic that employees and data be always available, this concept has important implications in all current business practice.

The size of portable devices range from a laptop computer with a large screen to mobile phones. Neilson (2009) lists 85% of the latter users with tiny screen versions with limited facilities, followed by Smart phones with larger screens and then full screen (iPhone) type with touch screen.

A comparison of the Nokia (2009) and Apple (2009) home pages reveal that respectively:

* the screen sizes vary from 2.6" to 3.5"
* the screen resolutions vary from (320 x 240) to (480 x 320)

These can be compared to a small office computer with a 22" (small) size and a screen resolution of (1024 x 768). The visual display and the usability are obviously completely different.

Forman and Zahorjan (1994) identified that problems occurred because " title bars and borders either consume significant ... screen space or, if reduced, become difficult to operate with a pointing device". Neilson's test results in 2009 indicate this is still a substantial problem, although the new iPhone literature suggests a multiple finger activation could improve this. Both groups comment on the necessity of continual scrolling to read the text. Stacked windows provided another irritation. Neilson reported such poor usability that users only performed a narrow range of activities.

Kingery and Furuta (1997) identified very real problems with user's ability to perceive words when the screen resolution, and font size (24 t0 14) and type (Ariel, Times New Roman and Gothic) were compared. The smaller the font and screen resolution the the less the users absorbed the words and their meaning. Ariel and Times New Roman proved to be superior to other fonts for comprehension.

Communication in this climate and with this disparity in devices would seem to suggest that businesses need to educate their employees in effective communication. Factors to consider would be the length of lines in messages, the font type used, the construction of sentences to use the web usability formula of dot points for information and the top-down principle of writing (the most salient information first). I feel this has to progress further still, with employees being forced to view their communication on both types of devices until they can mentally visualize what a large screen presentation would convert to on a mobile phone.

Similarly, business promoters and advertisers should continually compare their, often elaborate, web sites constructed on the wide screen to the mobile phone visualization. Only when this practice becomes wide-spread will they start producing new versions of these for mobile users. They will have to consider a visual presentation using more menu and dot point type displays and a format that requires users to scroll as little as possible to easily obtain the information required. They will also need to carefully test the font type and sizes to ensure that their users are able to absorb the words and their meanings more easily.

Forman and Zahorjan, researchers in mobile and parallel computing at the University of Washington, detail the technical problems encountered in programming mobile devices to enable users to access, download and store information. It covers areas of address migration, portability, security, privacy, download interuptions and user interface.

Although the article has a technical bias it is a useful resource in isolating concerns to senders with regard to security, privacy and user interface. In particular, the problems of screen resolution, toolbars, stacking of windows and the accessability of icons is discussed in detail. The effect of bandwidth on video conferencing (and images) is also considered.

Texas University academics, Kingery and Furita, detail their research results into experiments into the readability and recall of issues of users using a variety of combinations of screen resolution, font type and size, and monitor size. They used a variety of headings taken at random from local newspapers. They reported the most legible fonts were Times New Roman and Arial.


Although this is early research, it is particularly applicable in the current climate of extensive use of mobile devices with their reduced resolution and screen size. Of particular interest were the graphs of results of correctly perceived words and its implication in the exchange of information via mobile networks.

Concept 31 : Hypertext: Links or Structure



"While the WWW depends on hypertext, most of it uses hypertext merely for navigation (as in the first kind). Individual documents and even sites generally look much like linear, pap-printed materials. Bur, the whole of the web is rather more like the loose, unstructured 'hypertext' of the second kind. This suggests that hypertext is about both linking in the traditional way, but more effectively; and about structuring in a completely new way, based on this technology." (Allen, n.d.)

Net theory was developed in the late seventeenth century as an area of pure mathematics. Early in the twentieth century applied mathematicians realized that the simple solutions developed to solve these complex problems provided powerful methods for modern activities. User friendly computer programs have been developed, with the result that they are now in regular, everyday use to solve problems involving:

* maps (shortest route between two points, most economical and efficient routes for salesmen, garbage trucks, etc.)
* determining the minimum (or maximum) costs of projects
* determining the critical path of a large project - identifying the timing and sequences necessary for efficient supply of goods and services


Their strength lies in identifying all the tasks, or information, in a particular project and providing a visual representation between them using arrows to indicate the direction of movement and nodes (points at the start and end of each link).

The computer revolution has resulted in an information explosion where managers risk drowning in detailed data and scientists are buried under a mountain of technical reports. (Neilson, 1995)

This problem provides an accessibility problem of mammoth proportions, one that is ideally suited to solving with network methods. I think that it is vital if these resources are to be used with any degree of efficiency. However, the size of the data to be correlated and the nature of the information sources to be accessed poses it's own special problems.

The arrow/node diagrams with large amounts of data can be complex, with many levels of sub-diagrams for each node (or piece of information). Many users would not be able to easily find the most efficient path to explore this labyrinth. The current use of menus in more linear arrangements is being used and provide a partial solution. Interestingly, Studies by Krietzber and Shneiderman (as cited by Neilson, 1995) showed users presented with choices of a large number of small nodes performed better than ones using a small number of large nodes.

I have tried to solve the navigation problem user's encounter when deciding where they are in a small linear network, and where they have been previously. This seems to be of particular concern as the size of the network grows.

Defining the start and end of arrows is relatively easy in the practical examples used above. With documents and vidoes it is not necessarily straight-forward. Do you link to the start of the document or video or do you provide multiple links to inner sections? (Neilson, 1995)

Computer programs are already available that can quickly determine the best path through the network in order to locate various facets of information. However, defining user parameters and needs (often when they are not clearly understood by the user) is a further problem to be automated and solved.

It appears that a variety of solutions have been used to date with varying degrees of success. If we are to make some order and sense of the existing information it is imperitive that these be standardizes into a Protocol that will enable use and transport between documents.

Neilson, a leading expert in Web usability, discusses the structures of current hypertext documents. He looks at the three levels - user interface, "Hypertext Abstract Machine" and the data base level. He details:

* the problems of each, explaining the variety of methods currently being used to solve these and suggesting best case scenarios.
* Hypertext Engines that provide the basis for programmers to simply add the data to get the hypertext document they require.
* Open Hypertext in the context of fully aware, partly aware, and unaware user catagories, detailing the problems and strengths of each.


This article provides a very useful overall theoretical introduction to this area of computing.

In Chapter 1 Neilson gives an overview of the structure of a hypertext document. He classifies the document as having a non-sequential format, and compares it to normal documents and the sequential, linear format of most current web pages. The particular emphasis of this article is the powerful possibilities available when this format links a variety of media, for example video, sound and text files. He detils many practical areas in which such documents are used.


Chapter 2 deals with the format of a document, detailing the net diagrams used. He details the problems with defining links when constructing these for high usability.



Concept 26: Privacy and Security



"The Internet is a profoundly 'open' system and advanced Internet users are cautious about either accepting or sending material from and to unknown sources and are careful in releasing information about themselves in any form. Conceptually, the Internet challenges us to take greater responsibility for the protection of privacy and security than perhaps we are used to when dealing with the media." (Allen, n.d.)

Belanger, Hiller and Smith (2002) found that users usually considered privacy and security as one entity. I will use their distinctions between the two as a basis for this report. Privacy "is the ability to manage information about oneself" or "control over secondary use of information". Security "refers to consumer concerns with sharing information online due to expectations of threats to online security, including fear of hacker and informational theft". For a user to be responsible in their use they need to be aware of the issues and be able to understand what needs to be done.

Security

"Security mechanisms are only effective when used correctly" (Whitten & Tygar, 1998). I have found ignorance is widespread even among relatively heavy users of the Internet. Wireless routers are a particular problem. They have three progressive levels of security in order to prevent others from recognising that a connection is transmitting and to prevent them connecting to it. It is not uncommon to have information passed around campuses or workplaces about geographical sites that are vulnerable. From experience with ordinary users (and their lack of awareness) it is obvious that Whitten and Tygar's four levels of usability instructions are not adhered to by a vast number of router manufacturers. They suggest that users should be:

* "reliably made aware of the security tasks they need to perform"
* understand how to perform the tasks
* avoid making dangerous errors
* "comfortable with the interface" in order to "continue using it".


If you add to this the readability level of most instruction manuals, written by programmers using computing acronyms and terminology, it is obvious that many manufacturers are not providing the level of support necessary for effective protection.

Email programs are also offenders. The tools are present in most programs but, again, the interface is written by programmers and hence the measures available are not understood or used. Although tool bars are set up with icons and menus even a relatively heavy user need to hunt through Help files in order to understand what they aim to achieve and how to impliment them. Most users do not do this until they have a serious problem.

Information on all these issues should be supplied at the first use of the program, with the interface being written by someone who can communicate in the language of the average user.

Privacy

Privacy is invaded at many levels of user understanding. Installing Microsoft operating systems requires registration. For installed OEM software this involves identification numbers of component parts of the user's computer being routinely identified and stored with the serial number of the program in order to prevent multiple use of the program. Detailed information, although less intrusive, is involved in most other program installation.

Government, on-line banking and finance sections are usually more careful of user's data as they are liable by law for any breaches. However, with the wide spread use of off-shore data entry and storage facilities these are by no means secure from data mining and abuse.

Belanger, Hiller and Smith (2002) found that on-line commerce revolved around trustworthiness of the supplier and computer systems, with the readiness of consumers to provide personal details depending upon the supplier's ability to handle the sale, perceived integrity and perceived benevolance.

This detailed report provides an extensive summary of the existing literature on the privacy and security for suppliers aiming to establish a trusting relationship with prospective consumers. Issues of privacy and security, third party verification, security seals and security statements are dealt with in detail. The authors conducted an experiment to determine how users rated these features when considering the trustworthiness of the supplier and computer interface. They found that although most "express a desire for privacy and security" that, after deciding to purchase, they did not consider these options.


This is a highly cited resource written by academics from the Center for Global Electronic Commerce at Virginia Polytechnic. It formed the basis of my report.

On the premise that "security mechanisms are only effective when used correctly", the authors investigated the usability of most manuals and programs involved in computer security. They found the two fields of usability and security were different specialities and hence it was very rare to find a writer with the skills to impart the necessary information at a level that the normal user could comprehend and apply. They isolated four requirements that need to be met if the information is to understandable and usable.

This article, by Computer Science academics at the University of California, provided a valuable background to the security section of my report.

Annotated bibliography

After severe bouts of writer's block I have finally managed to start the assignment. I have found that my information retrieval skills have improved markedly. My Boolean and Advanced searches of the academic data bases produced, what appeared to be from the abstracts and search terms, some excellent articles. However, careful reading of the context statement showed that they were not really applicable. I had to start again. The range of magazines in the library e-journal section is incredible.

My second problem was the realization that I was not writing on the information I had gleaned but on my own ideas. This was very different from most other exercises I had done in the distant past in my Science and Education studies. The whole thing has been a very steep learning curve.

I updated and re-organised my Google Bookmark site to include detailed folders for Curtin > NET11 > Assignment > Attention Economy. I stored the most relevant articles in similar folders in Microsoft Word and then printed them for easier reading and noting.

  • Google general search produced a Wikipedia entry first in both cases. Copernic listed it second and Google scholar did not reference this site

  • Google general and Copernic listed similar academic references later

  • Both Copernic and Google Scholar produced the best references. Copernic gave a percentage value for the link relevance.

  • Google Scholar listed the number of citations - a useful measure of how relevant peers found it

Tools for using the Web

This was an interesting, but frustrating, exercise. It was fun to download the programs and play round with them. However, I forgot to make a System Restore point before each installation. I should know better. One of them (Webcopier) caused problems with Internet Explorer. I have version 7 installed and it appears I have to uninstall this and then repair 6 using the disk. However, uninstalling will probably cause problems with about 7 programs installed afterwards that link to it. It can wait. I use Firefox anyway so will only need it for NED12.

  • I updated Adobe Reader and Quicktime, checked I had Media Player.

  • Real Networks Real One proved interesting but after an initial play I put it aside to investigate further - after the course.

  • Webcopier proved useful - even though it caused me so many problems. I was able to download the multiple pages of PageTutor and work off line - a facility that Curtin probably applauds.

  • I am still evaluating Bookmark Buddy. It proved easier to copy and paste a lot of the manual rather than press buttons as it was not as intuitive as some of the others - at least to get the maximum benefit out of it. However, the jury is out on it as I realised I had so many links already from other units that I would probably never need again - or could easily find anyway. I have had a massive clean-up of my Firefox Bookmark site and created some new folders to more easily find and use the links. Bookmark Buddy makes everything much easier - but being a hoarder by nature - I think I would end up with hundreds of links I would never use.

  • Copernic proved a real gem. An program that indexes my files and allows me to find things using keywords is probably the most useful tool yet. It's companion site, Agent Basic, provided more powerful searching.

The Diigo is indeed a very powerful blog/sharing tool. It enables you to actively share your bookmarks with others in the group by:

  • highlighting and adding sticky notes to the web page that remain when others access it

  • organizing your bookmarks using tags and lists

  • accessing the pages from any computer

  • publishing your information to your blog

Alongside this the usual reference list (as with the one published as a HTML list) pales into insignificance. The latter are boring, difficult to read and only used by people with an urgent need to access these resources. It is static and must be redone each time. The FURL version builds a continuing, cooperative team effort.

Uses of blogs

Establishing support groups for people with specific needs*

(1.) Andrew Mahar (Radio Australia, 2009) established a group, InfoXchange, that collected and recycled old computers and supplied them to people in a large multi-storey housing estate in inner city Melbourne. He also established cheap access to the Internet for these people. He says "One of things about those communities is the things that often bind them are negative things; poor maintenance, bad security, drug and alcohol problems, family violence problems. Putting computers and the technology into those communities have given a great positive thing that connects them and binds those communities....They chat online together, they chat online with people outside of those communities." He goes on to report that "the communities there have over 30 different nationalities, so there are people who have come from all around the world and these people now are able to connect back in with their family and friends in the countries that they have come from as well."

(2.) These recycled computers are also being used by carers (at home) of chronically ill or disabled people. These people are usually severely stressed and poor in time and money, often unable to have any outside interaction. They are being encouraged to form support groups, using the Internet Chat sites, with other people coping with similar problems. Many such groups have been very successful in reducing the isolation and frustration of their existence.

Experts in particular areas wishing to get a message across

The use by political parties to get their policies across to a different age group can be a legitimate pursuit. It is working well for Barak Obama but failed miserably for John Howard.

Citizen journalism


  • Enables citizens to report some incidents that otherwise would go unreported due to censorship (like whistle-blowers but can be accomplished with anonymity if necessary)

  • normal publications are constrained by guidelines and can be sued if they print or publish damaging or incorrect information

  • Blog reporting is often published without these considerations. Hence, you need to:

    • check the truth of the information

    • check whether images have been modified or falsified

    • carefully analyse the interpretation and/or bias of any conclusions

Copyright issues

Assessment of my website

My web page was a condensation of commands used in the PageTutor exercise (Barta, n.d.). As such it is in contravention of the Copyright Act. The United States information source (Copyright Website LLC, 2009) gives the four factors necessary to determined the degree of copying allowed.

Factor 1 - Purpose and Character of Use: I fit non-profit. (35%)

Factor 2 - Nature of Copyrighted Work: Is it worthy of copyright protection by it's nature? It is a widely used aid so the answer is "yes'. (10%)

Factor 3 - Relative amount: This is where it gets difficult. It appears the relative size does not matter, the quality of the quotation used is also of consideration (see below). (10%)

Factor 4 - Effect upon Potential Market: Will it harm the potential market of the original? Since Barta also publishes a book and similar guide I would say I fail this test. (35%)

I look bad enough under these guidelines. However, they then go on to say that "When a use is found to be transformative" the use part of the equation is not important and the transformation overrides all.

Using the Curtin Logo on assignments

  • The Australian Copyright Council states that the website as a whole is not protected but the logos, as a component part, may be

  • IPAustralia defines Intellectual property as "the property of your mind or intellect". It distinguishes seven catagories: patents, trademarks, designs, copyright, circuit layout rights, plant breeded rights and confidentuality/trade secrets.

    • copyright: for "original material in literary, artistic, dramatic or musical works, films, broadcasts, multimedia and computer programs"

    • trademarks:for "letters, words, phrases, sounds, smells, shapes, logos, pictures, aspects of packaging or a combination of these, to distinguish the goods and services of one trader from those of another"

    • As the logo fits the trademark category it does not have the automatic protection in Australia that the copyright does. It must be registered. I checked the data base listed and the Curtin logo is a registered trademark.

    • It states that "An appropriate trade mark should be an integral part of the marketing strategy for your goods and services.The public will identify a certain quality and image with goods and services bearing your trade mark."
  • While an exercise commissioned as part of a Curtin course (and flagged as such) seems to fit the profile it would appear that the University has the right to decide if your efforts, published under it's banner, would damage it's "quality and image".

Five Most Important "Rules" when Writing for the Web

1. Write in an "Inverted Pyramid" (journalistic) style (Neilson, 1996)

  • Important points (conclusion) first

  • User's scan in an F-pattern and will only read in more detail if interested


2. Split information into "chunks" (Dartmouth, 2003)

  • "use smaller, coherent pieces to avoid scrolling"


3. Use hypertext links to connect the pages (or "chunks")

  • these links should indicate the information at the end

  • A short summary along with the link is helpful


4. "Be concise"

  • Use bulleted or ordered lists

  • Use colour to distinguish important points


5. Consider the user's needs

  • attach a .pdf printable version if the work is detailed and needs intense reading

  • aim for quick downloading by small images and sparing use of multimedia


Jacob Neilsen (Neilsen, 1994) noted the following changes to his original findings:

Optional 'Standards' task 2

I checked my HTML page against the W3C Validator. This time I had only 25 errors at the start (my first ever page had 86). As before, I found that the best way to use this resource is to correct the first few mistakes and then re-validate. In my first page the 86 errors reduced to just 27 with the correction of one mistake. This is because missing a bracket or punctuation mark used in the code can cause cascading errors down the page - one missed bracket can make anything following wrong as it does not open or close correctly. Slow and cautious seems to be the best way to go.

The errors are all primarily the construction of the code.
- Have you put the correct document declaration at the top? I used the transitional XHTML version.
- I had missed a statement of the font type statement in the "header" ( charset=utf-8). The Validator assumed this but it seemed better to add it.
- I needed to decide a layout on paper first and then decide what needed to be added to the CSS file in the way of formatting (and check my CSS file).
- As I had decided to use the page to write a summary of the tutorials my main errors were sorting out what code needed to be written in directly (tags for italic text) and what code needed to be written in with special character code and "pre" tags so that the computer code was displayed on my page.

In summary, the main thrust of the validator is to correct code errors. These were involved with the display on the page.

HTML page construction and tutorial



Barta (n.d.) has produced an excellent summary of HTML. Working through it revised a lot of terms and ideas. I have recommended it to one person in this field already. I still haven't mastered Photoshop so my heading is a patch of two images and a title instead of a background image and layered heading. I will have to work on that further. I was not sure what to do about the CSS sheet and HTML code so will try to post it to the web site allocated. Otherwise I will probably add it to blogger later on.

Writing code to appear on a screen, inside an HTML document, proved tricky as I had to distinguish between the code used to format the document and the publishing of the code (requiring special character encoding and the use of "pre" tags).

Writing HTML code has become easier but still proves very tricky. The smallest error can have drastic consequences. It seems that there are not only three versions of HTML but also two versions of CSS. It also seems that not all browsers read all of the new code correctly. (Powell, 2003)explains the code but then provides a detailed list of which browsers will recognize it. This makes constructing a web page a more difficult proposition than it should otherwise be. You would need to try your page in all types of browsers and resolutions if you are producing a commercial version. This also fails to recognize the miniaturization of web browsers in mobile phones and new smaller laptops with their reduced resolution (Neilson,2009).

Blogging seems to be a wysiwyg site where the HTML code is produced for you. However, like many of these programs it often produces errors in the blog unless you understand what is happening and can correct it (or press a lot of buttons in order to find the methods in the blog site e.g. text wrap when adding images to blogger.com). It has a different purpose - to allow people with no knowledge of HTML to produce a web page easily. The web page we constructed was intended for a more permanent display (usually) with the consequent problems of both your own description and search engine automatic allocation of meta-data.

1. One-to-many lists

If you use the Internet regularly it is almost impossible not to be included in a list these days. I have found myself included in some of the categories that provide a one-to-many list. These include:

(1) Purchase of software - you are usually offered the chance to receive regular news of updates and tutorials. (Adobe and Corel are particularly good with tutorials).

(2) Commercial purchases - Coles-on-line automatically sends weekly bargains forever if you use their site just once.

(3) Volunteer work and references - they want to keep you once they have snared your services.

(4) Interesting sites that crop up in courses. One that is particularly useful for background references and research in this course is:

Alertbox (http://www.alertbox.com) - Jacob Neilson is regarded as the leading researcher into web usability. His style is boring at times but his results on user's problems using the Internet are often eye-opening and very useful in web design. His recent article (Neilson, 2009) on readability of web pages on mobile phones was particularly interesting.

Many-to-many lists

Over the years I have joined, and mostly unsubscribed from, a variety of forums that provide help in various aspects of my course. Some of these include TextPad (text editor), Java (developer programming advice) and Microsoft.

The first time I tried I managed to negotiate the maze of enlisting procedures and (being desparate enough to try in the first place) put up my appeal for help immediately. I was very quickly told to check the archives first. Over time I came to realise that very few questions are new and the answer is usually there if you want to do a search. However, one did provide a forum for me to carry on a continued conversation with one expert in solving a particularly difficult (to me) problem.

The Blackboard, if used correctly, seems to me to be much more friendly in that you have a specific group that have common problems and can exchange specific information along with lecturer's updates. It has provided a particularly good medium in some of the more difficult programming subjects. It has also enabled lecturers to identify students who are having major difficulties and provide a timely remedy.

I have looked at social web contact sites but they do not appeal. It is probably my generation. As I indicated earlier:
- it is very easy to equate it to a real conversation with a known person and forget that you have no idea if the persona being portrayed is genuine
- it is easy to forget that that conversation is being stored in a permanent form somewhere and hence can have legal ramifications.

MSN, as a back-up to subjects, has been very revealing over time. You tend to get asked for help with a particular topic (I helped with the maths aspects and others with the programming problems) and then progress on to form a relationship with many of the individuals. It did make for more interesting personal interaction with other students and was often very rewarding. However, in several cases of marital problems or breakups, although I did not mind being a sympathetic ear, I was rather taken aback at the detail provided. My son laughed when I commented on this and said "Of course you are the perfect person to say it to, they can't say things like that to friends and family". Chat room style communication reminds me of the anonymity of train or bus stops where strangers will often offload something they cannot say to people they know - an understandable but potentially dangerous practice.

Overall, I have found the fast, varied methods of communication challenging, very useful and rewarding. I do not dislike the methods but worry about the culture that has developed in people of all ages where many do not seem to be aware of the risks involved if they do not use some care when using them.

Email considerations

General Discussion

The problem with this course is that it is so easy to get side-tracked - download Outlook and compare it with Thunderbird and Outlook Express, look for reference in Alertbox and end up reading other appealing titles, etc. I will try to write in heading and short sentences to maximize readability.

1. Immediacy of return of email

Most employees (and retirees) have tasks that required concentration when working on the computer. Work computers are often set to ring when an email arrives and work stops to check it. Neilson (2004) claims that:

"A one-minute interruption of your colleagues will cost them ten minutes of productivity as they re-establish their mental context and get back into "flow." Only the most important messages are worth 1,000 percent in overhead costs."

A more productive method would appear to be to check email in-boxes at regular intervals. Neilson recommends that you should "Establish a company culture in which it's okay not to respond to email immediately."

2. Saving and Back-up

I have sub-files in all other set-ups - don't know why I didn't think of this for email earlier. However, from hard experience, I have found that saving to a file and address book entries in an email program does not automatically mean it is saved in a back-up program. I will have to work out how to either set this up or simply save to "My Documents" regularly.

3. Attachments - coding and format

In helping fellow retirees with computer problems, one of the most common questions is "How do I open this attachment?" (followed by "How do I reduce the size of this photo?"). The suggestion to add a message at the end of an email that contains an attachment detailing the program used and the coding is useful. While the information may not always help the recipient directly it will save the time of the person called in to help. Adding a link to a program that changes the coding to a more readable form would help too.

4. Abbreviations and smilies

I am slowly learning what the more common versions of these mean. They are great to impart more feeling and personalisation to the message. However, I suggest that writers check the meaning (just as they check the spelling) before they send it. I still remember asking what her "lol" meant when replying to an msn. The sender had no idea.

5. Automatically adding emails to folders on receipt

I feel this is not a good idea - with the exception of junk mail. It is easy to miss a new entry in a file containing similar entries. It would be more efficient to read the in-box and file immediately to existing folders.

Again, from hard experience, junk mail folders can be trained (Thunderbird and Outlook) but need to be checked for automatically excluded important documents (results of an OUA exam for one). I remember listening to a tirade about email letters to her family not being delivered. The person concerned was continually telling very dubious jokes and managed to improve her hit rate considerably once she had junk mail filters explained.

6. Metadata

Surface data (titles) is obvious. I will have to investigate implied data. There are search functions in both Outlook and Thunderbird but I have not yet solved if you have to define metadata keywords and terms or if they are automatically included in the search. It will be interesting to see how efficient the programs are.

Answers to General Questions

1. All three programs listed the title, sender and subject. However, only Outlook enabled me to investigate the origin of the email (server) and path taken.

2. The 'cc' function allows me to send the same email to a number of people at one time. It particular it enables the coordination of groups and resources within an organization or a project.
The 'bcc' allows me to forward a copy of the mail to someone else without the original receiver being aware of it.
If a reply to an email originally envolved a group of people ("cc" or "bcc") 'Reply to all' simply allows me to send the same email to all the poeple involved in this original email. It can be very dangerous in that the total number of emails can escalate rapidly if used indiscriminantly.

4. This was interesting in that I had filters to exclude some unsolicited emails that had become a nuisance. I had to reinstall after a power wipe-out and have now found that this is one area that I had not backed up.

This has proved a challange. I wanted to understand what was happening and took a long time hunting up references. Most contained alphabet soup - lots of short initials.
Initially I thought you had to average a column (or the lot) and played round with Excel. As they say, if you can't get it to work read the instructions.
I found for the "trace" command (Microsoft Support, n.d.) they

  1. break the message into packets

  2. set a TTL (Time to live) of 1 ms

  3. send a message to the first server

  4. server checks for the destination address

  5. the message times out soon after it arrives so a "time exceeded" message is sent back to the start with, usually, the logical address of the server

  6. a second and third reading is taken for the first server

  7. the TTL is increased by 1 and a new message is sent. This enables it to arrive at the second server.Steps 4 and 6 are repeated

  8. this is repeated until the destination computer is reached

  9. the destination computer is forced to send a message back because the address of the port of this computer is made impossibly high so that the equivalent of a "not at this address is sent"


The interpretation of the mass of numbers in the trace at the end of this blog was then clearer.

  1. the IP address of the Curtin server was 134.7.179.56

  2. number of hops = 19

  3. each set of three allowed you to get an average of the time taken to get to that server.

  4. the average time to get to the destination was given by averaging the three numbers in the last line = 235 ms

  5. an * indicated that the server reached had not responded. This is probably due to a fire wall or router not being configured to accept the ping. the reason for this was probably a firewall or server configured to not receive trace and ping commands for reasons of security (Pettigrew, 2009 on the Curtin Discussion board)

  6. the time to reach the server was not necessarily the time taken to return to sender as this could have been a different path. This time was not recorded

  7. A ping of the server was achieved in 5 hops. I think this is because it required only a small amount of extra information to be sent. Extra data required to check whether all the packets had arrived, their order of reassembly and the codes to check if the data had been sent accurately were not included

  8. An interesting extra fact was that Microsoft and Unix use different protocols to calculate trace route and ping (tech-FAQ site, n.d.). They "differ in the way they display output, in the way they send test packets, and in the number of command line option they provide". The output differences did confuse me initially.

  9. I came to understand how hackers could make use of the information provided by this resource

This looked a formidable task but when I finally realized that the entry was truly anonymous - that is I did not have to enter password or name, it was a breeze. "CAPITALIZATION matters".

It actually solved another puzzle I had intended to solve one day (famous last words). I have purchased two large programs over the years from England (I can't remember which ones now) . Both requested that I choose a "mirror" site from a list in order to facilitate the transfer. The sites were geographically based but I was told it did not really matter which one I choose. I now realize that the sites were the servers talked about in module 1 (School of Media Studies, n.d.).

Telnet contemplations

Telnet is based on the DOS operating system. Ghitis and Statti(2001) indicate that
"DOS was (and still is) a non-graphical line-oriented command- or menu-driven operating system, with a relatively simple interface but not overly "friendly" user interface."

With this in mind I think use of the telnet type presentation (or DOS type input) should be restricted to instances where the user requires simple direct programming that has a single purpose and does not require complex interaction with other programs.

Programming of a graphics calculator to extend the uses of, or more efficiently use, the given functions would provide a simple example. Donnelly (1995)gives examples of using the HP 38G Calculator to efficiently use data in calculation programs.

Chips are being programmed into a variety of devices (refrigerators, car engines, etc.) to control the function and efficiency of their operation. These do not require complex interaction of users and hence do not need a graphical interface.

It is tempting to include mobile phones and hand held devices that require significant menu interaction. However, with the complexity of these in recent times, more complex HTML programming seems indicated.

The StarWars telnet task produced by Jansen (n.d.) was very entertaining and an interesting use of DOS. However I feel that, with the availability of Java Script, such graphic presentations can be created far more efficiently.

Was the latter reference specifically included to make us reference this site? If so, I can tell you that it required a great deal of repeat starts and stops to access the required information.

I am actually starting to enjoy myself

Hi Peter

I agree with you now. I had read so many stories of problems with blogs that I was very nervous about the whole thing. Now I have read the blogs produced by the others I am actually starting to enjoy the experience and have even organized to put one on my friend's computer so that she can read her grand-niece's efforts. (She is a very with-it 83 year old who is determined to keep up with the times and the younger members of the family)

Another mistake - I have just realized that I need to respond to your comment in the thread (or message box) in that thread, not as a new post. This is a steep learning curve but addictive. I know now why teenagers talk about acquiring hundreds of friends.

This exercise using telnet takes me back to my early days with the TRS80 and 216k of memory. It also reminds me of the newer graphics calculators and mobile phones - all menus and "what do I press next" decisions. At the time we thought it was so advanced but it is really tedious and time-consuming. It is interesting that the case of a letter does not matter. I had forgotten that part.

The one difficulty I had with this was the saving of the screen. I should have saved it as a .tiff or .jpg file. It did not upload as an .xdoc file. I had to return to the email and copy the contents to clipboard.
